Plane Crashes in New York City

A US Airways jet- Flight 1549- crashed in the Hudson River shortly before 3:30 PM Eastern Time. Reportedly, a flock of birds flew into one of the engines just when the Airbus A320 was taking off from LaGuardia Airport, where it was en route to Charlotte, North Carolina. The crash happened near the USS Intrepid.

All 155 aboard- 15o passengers and five crew members- survived. This can be credited to several factors:

    • The pilot landed expertly- even if it was in the Hudson.
    • Within minutes, first responders came on the scene. Some arriving before the plane crashed.

Several people were taken to Manhattan area hospitals for treatment of hypothermia.
