Hurricane Season Could Be Extremely Busy

The 2008 hurricane season could be a very busy one. Given the fact that we've been seeing reports of twisters devastating parts of the south and east this winter and spring- and reports of tornadoes striking northern and central Colorado; southeast Wyoming, and the Santa Ana, California area yesterday- it wouldn't surprise me if the first tropical storm begins blowing the first week of June. And hurricane season starts June 1.

The National Hurricane Center predicts 12 to 16 storms, with six to nine of those becoming hurricanes. Two to five of those hurricanes could be major ones. Now whether any of those will be like Katrina of August 2005; or even Andrew of August 1992, who knows? But given recent disasters- typhoon Nargis that recent devastated Myanmar; those aforementioned tornadoes (that March 14 event in Atlanta still sticks strong in my mind)- 2008 could turn out to be one of the wildest years that nature has unfurled on us.

New Orleans could once again be under the gun, and Miami itself may find itself like the Big Easy did three years ago. Exacerbating that situation, of course, is the fact that the Miami/Fort Lauderdale/Key West area is right on the Atlantic. If a Category Five were to strike- and it could very well do just that- Miami, and life in that region will likely never be the same again. Of course, I'm just speculating that a hurricane could strike Miami this year. But even as I'm no forecaster- let alone a psychic- I'm just getting that feeling that some major storm will hit southeast Florida this year. I'd love to be wrong about that.

California To Become the Second State to Recognize Same Sex Marriages

In a 4-3 ruling, the California State Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22, the voter approved ban on same sex marriage. Prop 22 was approved in 2000 by a margin of 61-39.

Today's ruling will give the gay and lesbian citizens of California the opportunity to marry within 30 days of this ruling, however, the group Alliance Defense Fund- heard of them, Oregon?- say that they have enough signatures to put a ballot measure on the ballot this fall. This ballot- which has yet to have a proposition number- if approved will put Prop 22 language in the California constitution.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says that he will uphold the court ruling. And as the saying goes, 'As California goes, so goes the rest of America' usually follows. So, if the US Supreme Court say "take your 'Defense of Marriage' rules and shove it!," and do it before ol' Dubya leaves office

Click on the title for the link to KPIX-CBS 5. There, they have the court's ruling on PDF.

I haven't read the document yet- I will- but from what I heard, the justices ruled that same sex marriage will not impinge on opposite sex marriage, which means that James Dobson, Pat Robertson and their gangs of idiots are just being paranoid morons. Of course, this ruling is making his hair fall out, and I wouldn't doubt it if their nasty paws hit the Golden State before this fall's general elections to rally the forces- that is, his fellow conservative and hypocritical religious right (what a mismonger!) forces.

Of course, if any gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender rights organization asks me to chip in financially to fight Dobson's goons, I'll do what I can to make sure that Prop 22 doesn't make it into the California constitution.

Meanwhile, here in Oregon, the domestic partnership law doesn't seem to be under any threat.

I'll keep watching the developments on this ruling, and the ramifications of it, and the fight over this.

Well, At Least He Can Enjoy the Retirement in Crawford

First, my heart gets broken over Jenna Bush's weekend wedding- the flood I'm in is almost up to my head (yeah, it's that bad, folks...lol!).

Now, that flood's about to get a lot higher, but I'm not sad. Click on the title, where you'll be directed to the website Citizen Sugar. Watch the video, and tell me- in the comments box whether our intrepid Commander in Chief has a future in country music. Oh, types like Alan Jackson and George Strait may agree (those traditionalist country music types all think alike, don't they?), but I'm not sure the rest of us do.

OBAMA'S JUST ABOUT THERE: Looks like talk show host Rush Limbaugh's wet dream of Hillary Clinton winning the Democratic presidential nomination may remain just that- a dream. The freshman US senator from Illinois is 132 delegates away from clinching the presumptive nomination. The remaining states who have primaries:
Kentucky, with 51 delegates; and Oregon, with 52. Both hold their primaries next Tuesday. Right now, Obama leads in the Portland Tribune/KPTV Fox 12 poll by a 20 point margin (55-35, with 20% undecided). Word has it that Obama will declare victory in Oregon, that he has the majority number of candidates to become the nominee.

Puerto Rico has its' Democratic primary on June 1, they have 55 delegates. Two days later, South Dakota has theirs, as will Montana. I'm aware that the Republicans hold their Idaho primary on May 27, and their New Mexico on June 3, but with Arizona senator John McCain being the presumptive nominee, at this point, it's no longer a big deal.

But Hillary Clinton's win in West Virginia last night- by a 67-26 margin- may have dented things a bit for Obama. It seems that Obama can't connect with some rural voters, and according to CNN, some Clinton supporters may jump ship over to the McCain camp. But if Obama can win Oregon, Kentucky, and even Puerto Rico, then he will indeed be the likely nominee for the Democrats. But, if Hillary wins any of the states- say, Kentucky and Montana- this drama may extend into the national convention at the Pepsi Center in Denver in August.

Rush Limbaugh's strangely erotic dream may go on a bit longer, indeed.

    IT'S JUST A T-SHIRT, Y'ALL!
A Marietta, Georgia bar owner created a t-shirt, with a Curious George-like monkey eating a banana. On the bottom: 'Obama in '08'.

Not surprisingly, not many are amused.

    CNN Headline News/YouTube
The owner says that he means no racism in this tee. But you have to remember one thing, kids, you connect a monkey- be it a real one or a cartoon one- to a black person, famous or no, to them that's more like cruisin' for a bruisin'. So, this owner may not like what others have to say about him, let along his character.

This Lover's Tragedy Could've Been Avoided

The story coming out of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex of Tracy Roberson's lover, Devin LaSalle, getting killed by Tracy's husband Darrell is tragic enough. After all, Darrell caught Tracy and Devin in a heated moment of lust, and to save her own skin, Tracy falsely cried rape. Finding your spouse doing the nasty with someone else can bring out the worse, no doubt. But honestly, this tragedy could have been avoided- and Tracy would've avoided the 30 month sentence for manslaughter, and Devin would still be alive and possibly still seeing Tracy.

First off, I wouldn't park my damn vehicle in front of the tryst partner's house- especially if that partner is married. As mentioned above, getting caught could bring out all kinds of emotions- as in this case, when Darrell found Tracy and Devin fucking in Devin's truck, he got out the .44. If anything, I would've rented a room- or, if Devin was still single (or divorced), did the dirty deeds done dirt cheap at his house. Of course, I'd make sure Darrell- and/or the PI he hired- isn't following me.

Now, I don't condone adultery, but neither do I condemn it. After all, if there's no chance of the fighting spouses ever getting back together, the estranged partners could do whatever they damn well please with someone else. Fight it out in divorce court, cut the losses, and fuhgeddaboudit.

So, had Devin and Tracy gotten a room while Darrell was playing poker with his friends, the two cuckolds would still be together- and Tracy would still be free.

Does It Really Take Fifteen Cops To Arrest Three Suspects?

Let me ask you this question. How many police officers does it take to arrest, say, three men? Or even better, how many cops does it take to arrest even one person?

I ask this because I've seen, with my own eyes, three or four police cars- and even six (or more) officers- just to arrest one person. Some people are belligerent, granted, but does it really take six cops to arrest one person? I think not.

(watch the footage from WTXF Fox 29 Philadelphia (via CNN), by clicking on the title).

On the same wavelength, I think having fifteen officers to arrest three shooting suspects is a bit too excessive. Sure, there was a car chase, but I think two officer per suspect would be sufficient. Now, it's true that I don't know the full details, but according to the news account, the three are persons of interest in a shooting. And to exacerbate the situation, the officers were mourning one of their own, Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, who was gunned down Saturday.

But still, I think those officers should have used a bit more discretion and restraint on the three, lest any of them tried to harm them. And even then, the officers should have things under control instead of going ballistic.

No doubt, more will be known about this controversy soon.

Saints Owner To Buy New Orleans Fox Affiliate

I couldn't stop laughing when I got the news on my e-mail this morning.

The New Orleans Saints owner, Tom Benson, is buying the Fox affiliate, WVUE-TV, Fox 8 for $41 million (USD). Benson also owns the New Orleans Voodoo arena football team and several automobile dealerships. He's also into real estate and banking.

I remember back in 2001 when he was bitching about building a new stadium for the Saints- even as the Superdome still seats 70,000, and was (at the time) in relatively good shape. Benson can barely manage the Saints, and now he wants to run a TV station.

I wonder how that will turn out.
