California To Become the Second State to Recognize Same Sex Marriages

In a 4-3 ruling, the California State Supreme Court overturned Proposition 22, the voter approved ban on same sex marriage. Prop 22 was approved in 2000 by a margin of 61-39.

Today's ruling will give the gay and lesbian citizens of California the opportunity to marry within 30 days of this ruling, however, the group Alliance Defense Fund- heard of them, Oregon?- say that they have enough signatures to put a ballot measure on the ballot this fall. This ballot- which has yet to have a proposition number- if approved will put Prop 22 language in the California constitution.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says that he will uphold the court ruling. And as the saying goes, 'As California goes, so goes the rest of America' usually follows. So, if the US Supreme Court say "take your 'Defense of Marriage' rules and shove it!," and do it before ol' Dubya leaves office

Click on the title for the link to KPIX-CBS 5. There, they have the court's ruling on PDF.

I haven't read the document yet- I will- but from what I heard, the justices ruled that same sex marriage will not impinge on opposite sex marriage, which means that James Dobson, Pat Robertson and their gangs of idiots are just being paranoid morons. Of course, this ruling is making his hair fall out, and I wouldn't doubt it if their nasty paws hit the Golden State before this fall's general elections to rally the forces- that is, his fellow conservative and hypocritical religious right (what a mismonger!) forces.

Of course, if any gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender rights organization asks me to chip in financially to fight Dobson's goons, I'll do what I can to make sure that Prop 22 doesn't make it into the California constitution.

Meanwhile, here in Oregon, the domestic partnership law doesn't seem to be under any threat.

I'll keep watching the developments on this ruling, and the ramifications of it, and the fight over this.
